DIY

DIY ist die Abkürzung für do it yourself. Für manche ist es ein Qualitätsstandard, für Papas Reparaturen am Haus, für andere die Möglichkeit ein paar Cents zu sparen oder erheblich mehr. Für andere wiederum wird es sowas wie zur Lebenshaltung. Wie vieles wurde es auch in der Punkrock Bewegung aufgenommen und man gab ihm eine entsprechend neue Definition. DIY war nicht mehr „alles hält mit Ducktape besser“, nein es wurde so lange mutiert bis ein Statement war. Ihr wollt unsere Platte nicht produzieren? Fuck you! Dann machen wir es halt selbst. Wieso sollen wir T-shirts unserer Band bei dem Typen drucken lassen, der versucht unsere Konzerte zu verbieten? F.U machen wir es halt selbst. Die Liste lässt sich beliebig fortsetzen von Stickers über Plattencover, über Skateboards und und und. Daraus entstanden sind in Amerika Firmen wie: Better Youth Organisation, Fat Wreck Chords, Epitaph, um nur einige zu nennen. Geht man in Laden etwas kaufen, sei es eine Wurst oder ein Auto, so wurde dieses Produkt mit dem Ziel hergestellt, einer möglich breiten Masse zu gefallen. Dafür wurden Kompromisse eingegangen bis von der ursprünglichen Idee nicht mehr viel übrig war.Ich kann euch nicht genau sagen, wann genau ich anfing mich mit diesem DIY Dingens zu identifizieren. War es damals als ich meine Auto Reparaturen nicht zahlen konnte, war es als ich zu einem Lackierer ging und dessen Preise hörte oder war es, als ich zum ersten mal ein Smokin Shutdown Magazin in den Händen hielt? Spielt keine Rolle, ich versuche, wann immer es möglich ist, mir meine Sachen selbst zu machen. Damit meine ich nicht alltäglichen Scheiss wie Löffel oder Hosen:-) Nein eher so die coolen Sachen, die mir halt am Herzen liegen, Essen, Autos und nun ein Surfboard. Leider muss ich euch sagen, dass es vom DIY Standpunkt her von Anfang an in die Hose ging. Fangen wir von vorne an. Nach fünf Jahren ist mein altes Surfboard durchgeritten und ich habe auch Bock mal ein anderes zu probieren. Also habe ich mich hier in Bali schlau gemacht, wo ich mein eigenes Board shapen kann. Bei Danu Custom Boards bin ich dann fündig geworden. Er meinte komm vorbei und wir shapen dein Board zusammen. Sofort machte er ein paar Fotos von mir, wie ich dem Board das Shape aufzeichne, wie ich es aussäge u.s.w. Alles wäre vorhanden um euch die perfekte Geschichte inkl. Beweisfotos aufzutischen. Es kam aber so heraus, dass ein anderer alles machte, ich aber wenigstens Einfluss darauf nehmen konnte, wie es genau wird und etwas helfen konnte. Selbstverständlich kann man auch vom Zuschauen viel lernen. Nach wie vor ist es mein Ziel mal mein eigenes Board zu machen. Dieses hier ist diesem Ziel so nahe wie halt möglich gekommen. Im Gegensatz zu den in Massen produzierten Boards, wo eigentlich der PU-Schaum schon vorgeformt ist, dann mit einer C'n'C Maschine noch ein klein wenig korrigiert wird, ist hier nach wie vor alles Handarbeit. Mangels PU-Schaum werden die Boards hier aus handelsüblichem Styropor gemacht, somit können sie nicht mit Polyester geglast werden, sondern halt mit Epoxy. Ist so oder so stärker und weniger giftig. Hier läuft alles wie in den good old days des Surfens. Wo in kleinen Garagen und Hinterhöfen mit viel Schweiss und Staub Surfboards aus dem vollen geshaped wurden.

For others, it becomes something of a way of life. How much other things, it was taken up in the punk rock movement and given a correspondingly new definition. Let's do it ourselves. The list can be continued on and on from stickers to record covers to skateboards and and and. This has resulted in companies such as: Better Youth Organization, Fat Wreck Chords, Epitaph just to name a few.If you go to the store to buy something, be it a sausage or a car, this product was made with the aim of pleasing a large number of people. For this compromises were made until not much was left of the original idea.
I can not tell you exactly when exactly I started identifying with this DIY thing. Was it back then when I could not pay for my car repairs, was it when I went to a painter and heard of his prices, or was it when I first had a Smokin Shutdown Magazine in my hands? It doesn't matter, I try whenever possible to do my own stuff. I do not mean everyday stuff like spoons or pants :-) No, rather the cool stuff that I care about, food, cars and now a surfboard.
Unfortunately I have to tell you that from the DIY viewpoint it went wrong from the very start. But let's start from the beginning. After five years my old surfboard is ridden through and I also like to try something else. So I was looking here in Bali for a place where I can shape my own board. At Danu Custom Boards I found it. He said come over and we shape your board together. Immediately he took some pictures of me as I draw the shape of the board, how I saw it out and so on. Everything would be there to give you the perfect story. Several proof photos. But it turned out that another one did everything. At least I could influence how it will be exactly. And of course you can also learn a lot from watching. My goal is still to make my own board. This one has come as close as possible to my goal. In contrast to the mass-produced boards where actually the foam is already formed, till a CNC machine does just a little bit of editing. Here is still all manual labored. In the absence of PU foam, the boards here are made of commercial styrofoam, so they can not be glassed with polyester but rather with epoxy. It is either way stronger and less toxic. Everything here is still in the mood of the good old days of surfing. Where in small garages and backyards with a lot of sweat and dust Surfboards were made out of the full block of foam.

Nun fangen wir an dem Schaumkern mal ein grobes shape zu geben. Wir versuchen so lange wie möglich alles in rechen winkeln zu behalten | Now we give the core a roughly shape. As long as possible we try to keep everything in square angles
